Simply Sunny..

A Sunny Disposition - It's a simple thing really. Smiling as you speak, being friendly, speaking in an upbeat optimistic tone. Its not all that a difficult thing to do when you think about it. It comes naturally to some more then others it seems, but in the end the actions are simple. At the same time, its an extremely powerful thing. I was recently reminded of this as I stood completely aware of its effects on me during a conversation with an acquantance from my teenage years. This person who was little more to me then a pleasant smiling face in the crowd all those years ago stood before me making me feel all the warmth of the sun. It was simply impossible to not have my already good mood even bettered. As a result, we probably spoke more in those 15-20 minutes then we did in a say about a year of high school. I left the conversation thinking of all the positive things we'd talked about, feeling happy for her and also thinking of what a happier place it'd be if everyone put on their "best face" all the time.

One Goal

Recently a friend of mine asked me to write about "One Goal" that I wanted to achieve in my life. Phrased that way the topic reminds me of a song from a Broadway show named RENT. The Song is called Glory. The lyrics are pasted below.

One Song
Before I Go
Glory
One Song To Leave Behind

Find One Song
One Last Refrain
Glory
From The Pretty Boy Front Man
Who Wasted Opportunity

One Song
He Had The World At His Feet
Glory
In The Eyes Of A Young Girl
A Young Girl
Find Glory
Beyond The Cheap Colored Lights

One Song
Before The Sun Sets
Glory - On Another Empty Life
Time Flies - Time Dies
Glory - One Blaze Of Glory
One Blaze Of Glory - Glory

Find
Glory
in a song that rings true
truth like a blazing fire
an eternal flame

Find
One Song
A Song About Love
Glory
From The Soul Of A Young Man
A Young Man

Find
The One Song
Before The Virus Takes Hold
Glory
Like A Sunset
One Song
To Redeem This Empty Life

Time Flies
And Then - No Need To Endure Anymore
Time Dies
"One Song

"

It really is a beautifully written song wrought with the angst of desperation and the love of life and being human. Its actually one of my favorite Broadway show songs. It is however in a way very morbid. Its as if once achieved the life is meaningless. It is however a respectable goal in my opinion, to contribute to the world of music a song that would connect with the people. In actuality this song, this musical was just that for that song writer. How fitting?

The thing that separates the character in that song and most of us is that we don't think our end is near and don't have that desperation...so we can afford ourselves more goals, or different less measurable ones. When I first sat down to think about the topic, I thought of how to approach it. I thought of all the things I wanted to achieve. Then I realized I was being silly, making a checklist of sorts. No different then the man with the known end in site...just a longer list because presumably I have longer to live. However, things in this world can happen unexpectedly...and life can be all too short. So, how we reconcile this? The answer came to me as I had known it inside all along, because its what I have always believed and that is that I don't want to look back at my life and say...I completed A through Z on my list...so I've done what I wanted...or worse yet only do A-K and have the rest made impossible by untimely death or going seriously astray; what I really want (my one goal if you will) is to look back and say I lived a good life and was good to others - that I lived the life I wanted to live. Simple enough huh?
